Blogging is a great way to boost the viewing figures of your website and a blog for B2C or is straightforward to set up. When blogging in a consistent and informative way it can lead to fresh sales and a wider audience reach. If you like to blog, expert tips are always well received by readers.
It may seem easy to sit down and write but have you ever considered what you should AVOID doing at all costs? This where I can help with my tips on what not to post online!
(1) Don’t post without considering consequences
When writing a blog post you should always consider the consequences that the post could have. If available to anyone online whether in a public or private forum please remember that it can be read and screenshot by anyone with internet access. It is always a good idea to be prepared and think through whether you are happy for your post to be publicly visible. The general rule is, if you wouldn’t like it to be printed on the front of a newspaper, don’t post it (this applies to weblogs and emails too).
(2) Don’t write when upset or angry
It is not a great idea to settle down and write a post (whether personal or professional) when your emotions are running high, especially anger, hurt and upset. Write the post in a word document and refrain from posting publicly. In these instances I would approach it as a therapeutic exercise. Point (3) is a good idea in this case. That way once you have calmed down you can re-read the post and then decide whether you think it is still appropriate to go live or to be deleted.
(3) Don’t draft blogs in the live CMS
Use a program like MS Word to create draft blogs, not the live content management system (CMS). Do not place as a draft post in case of accidental publishing. Thoroughly edit before posting.
(4) Avoid personal moans
While it is important to be authentic in your blogs, you should always be polite and professional. Even when you blog for B2C, non-professional audience, you should still maintain a professional persona. Remember your business objectives – blogging is about sharing information on your products and industry, not your personal gripes.
(5) Don’t go off topic
Always write something that will be beneficial to your business, things that people will want to see and be interested in. Try to stick to topics that will pull in your target audience and effectively gain you more followers.
(6) Don’t spam with inbound links
Do not continuously spam your blog with links to other parts of your website (we recommend 2 inbound links at most).
(7) Don’t oversell
You should keep your blog relevant and showcase your new products for current and potential followers, no one wants to continuously see all about why they should buy your product so keep it an interesting read and not just an advertising platform. Top tips and opinion pieces draw in viewers.
(8) Don’t publish without proofreading
Do not write a post and publish without proof reading it first. You can be sure that your readers and competitors with notice and even point them out in public view. Blog posts on a business page should flow well and engage with the reader. You want your readers to keep coming back and for them to share your posts. Without adequate checking of spelling and grammar you will look unprofessional and posts will feel rushed if mistakes have been made.
(9) Don’t post continuous blocks of text
When writing a post you need try to have key points or sections that follow easily from one to the next. Use these as a guideline to keep yourself on the correct track whilst typing. They will keep the flow of the piece and show a natural progression when being read. Break the text up with images and video content to make it a more interesting read.
(10) Don’t make up facts
Do not write your opinion as cold hard fact unless you can prove that they are (such as statistical data and quotes from printed authority), not everyone is going to agree with you and trying to force an opinion as fact may cause conflict and issues for your business. Fact check everything, as you can be sure your readers will, and you don’t want your comments box to be full of people pointing out your errors as you will quickly lose credibility.
(11) Don’t slate your competitors
Do not write negatively about a competitor, another business and their product. If you have an issue with others take it offline. It is bad form to do this and it could cause a very uncomfortable negative discussion. Be the better person and rise above any negativity.
(12) Don’t rise to negative blog commenting
Do not reply to negativity in your blog. If you have been trolled then my advice would be to ignore the writer/commenter. There may be occasions where it is appropriate to share a fact if you have been misrepresented, but always do this with politeness and grace. It is never a good idea to write a post addressed to someone who has trolled your site. Here is a recent textbook case of what NOT to do when you are faced with negative comments.
